How to Play quot;Kotor 1quot; on Windows Vista


Compatabiliity Mode
1. Uninstall KOTOR.
2. Download SecuROM's updated swkotor.exe file (swkotor.zip), the patch and the replacement mss32.dll file.
3. Change the compatibility mode for setup.exe. To do this, open up 'Computer,' right-click on your DVD drive and select 'Explore.' Right-click on 'setup.exe.' Select 'Properties' and then 'Compatibility.' Select 'Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP Service Pack 2(SP2).' Also, click the box next to 'Run as administrator.' Click on 'Apply' and then 'OK.'
4. Run the install program by double-clicking the 'setup.exe' file for which you've just changed the compatibility.
5. Change the compatibility for the patch by right-clicking on the file, selecting 'Properties,' 'Compatibility' and 'Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP Service Pack 2(SP2).' Install the game patches by double-clicking on the patch file(s) you've downloaded and changed the compatibility for.
6. Right-click on the 'SWKotOR' folder (usually C:\Program Files\LucasArts\SWKotOR), select 'Properties' and make sure that the box next to 'Read Only' is unchecked, then hit 'Apply.' Select 'Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files.'
7. Replace the mss32.dll file in the SWKotOR folder with the downloaded version.
8. Extract the 'swkotor.zip' file to your SWKotOR directory (usually C:\Program Files\LucasArts\SWKotOR). Right-click on the updated 'swkotor.exe' file and make sure that it is set to run in Windows XP compatibility mode.
9. Right-click on the KOTOR shortcut and select 'Properties.' Select the 'Compatibility' tab, then set the compatibility mode to Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). Also, make sure that 'Run as Administrator' is selected.
Other Options
10. Download and install DirectX 9.0c.
11. Download and install new drivers for your video card. Drivers are available from nVidia or AMD directly (See Resources).
12. Run the game without patching.
13. Run the game in an XP emulator or virtual XP environment.
14. Try any of the fixes in the instructions above on their own. Some users find that just the new drivers, secuROM fix or compatibility mode changes work for them.
