How to Fix Rundll32.exe Errors

1. Click 'Ctrl + Alt + Delete' on your computer's keyboard to open the Task Manager window. Click the 'Processes' tab and search for a rundll32.exe program. If one is running and appears to be accessing a lot of your system's resources, click 'End Process' as it is likely a malicious program and not a true Windows program.
2. Run software to seek out, detain and remove viruses, malware, spyware and adware. Often these malicious programs corrupt DLL files or cause them to be deleted or moved and, as mentioned, some rundll32.exe programs may in fact be viruses on your system.
3. Reboot your computer to update any changes you may have made recently to your files and programs. Many programs and applications require a reboot for successful installation.
4. Uninstall a recently installed or changed program or application and then reinstall it using the default settings. An installed program may not have loaded properly, an installation via the Internet may have been interrupted enough to create errors or the program may have a bug. If you uninstalled a program and see a rundll32.exe error, reinstall the program and then uninstall once more.
5. Retain the services of a Microsoft certified technician, if all else fails, to review and fix your system's Registry.

Identify and Remove the Process
5. Write down the name of the DLL file that is experiencing the error on a piece of paper. When the error message pops up, there should be a system directory and file name displayed. The system directory will begin with your operating system drive letter (most commonly 'c:\'), then will be followed by a directory location ('windows\system32\' or something similarly formatted), and then the file name ('usvdgpo.dll' for example). It is not necessary to write down the entire thing, just the file name on the end.
6. Identify the process by visiting the Process Library website (link provided in the 'Resources' section below). Near the top of the screen there is a text area next to a button that is marked 'Find.' Type the file name that you noted in the above step into the text area, then click the 'Find' button.

How to Restore Riched20 DLL

1. Open your default antivirus program if you have one installed and run a full system scan. Error messages related to .dll files are often related to viruses or malware, so this is a good first step. If your virus scan catches something, take the program's recommended action to delete or quarantine the infected files, then see if the problem persists.
2. Restore your system to a restore point from before you experienced problems related to riched20.dll. To do this, click 'Start,' look in the 'Programs' list, then in the 'Accessories' folder, and finally in the 'System Tools' folder. Click 'System Restore.' On the 'System Restore' screen, indicate that you want to restore your system to an earlier point and select a valid date off the calendar from before you experienced problems. Click the 'Restore' button and wait for your computer to complete the restore process, then see if the problem persists.
3. Reinstall your Microsoft Office software, or if you prefer, just reinstall Microsoft Outlook. To do this, insert the original installation disc in your CD-ROM drive, wait for the installation program to auto-launch, and follow the on-screen prompts to reinstall Outlook or the entire suite. Outlook is the program that relies on riched20.dll the most, and a duplicate of the file is included with the installation files of Outlook.
4. Download and install the Microsoft security updates that affect riched20.dll. A link to the download location can be found in the Resources section of this article. These updates correct a vulnerability in Microsoft RichEdit that may have contributed to your problem in the first place. When you go to download the updates, make sure to download one for your operating system and one for your Microsoft Office suite, and make sure you select the right updates for your version of each product. Double-click the downloaded files and follow the on-screen prompts to apply the updates.
