How to Troubleshoot a Computer Error

Troubleshooting Steps
1. Write down the entire error message. Researching particular error codes is easier with the details. Note what you were doing at the time of the error message. For example, you had installed a new program or device, upgraded firmware, device drivers, etc.
2. Check your system devices. Click 'Start > Control Panel.' Open the 'Device Manager.' If there is a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark next to any of the devices, this is a warning that the drivers are missing or corrupt.
3. Refresh or reinstall the driver through the 'Properties' window. Restart your computer. Check the device again in the 'Device Manager.' Delete and reinstall the driver if this did not fix the problem. Reboot your computer.
4. Check for updated versions of the device you have installed by visiting the manufacturer's website. Windows Vista and 7 are not compatible with most devices until you install the patch provided.
5. Check all cables and power cords in the computer and the wall plug to ensure plugs are secure. If you installed a new device, snug up the cable connections to the device and motherboard.
