How to Restore Winlogon Userinit

1. Download and install the Microsoft hotfix. The hotfix does not always work, but for some corrupted userinit issues it does. Download and install at the following Microsoft web page:
support.microsoft.com/?kbid=313322
Reboot the computer. If the hotfix does not work, continue to step two.
2. Insert the Windows Install CD disc into the drive. Reboot the computer to the recovery DOS prompt. The recovery prompt is found as an option when Windows boots to the CD. The Windows CD contains the 'Userinit.exe' file in the directory 'Windows\System32.' Copy this file to the 'C:\Windows\System32' directory of the hard drive. Remove the CD and boot the computer in Safe Mode.
3. Set the registry to point to the 'Userinit.exe' file. In Safe Mode, Click the Windows 'Start' button and select 'Run.' Type 'regedit' into the text box to open the registry editor. Navigate to the registry key 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon.'
4. Right-click the 'Winlogon' key and select 'Edit.' Type 'userinit.exe' into the text box labeled 'value.' Reboot the computer.
