How to Work OpenGL in Windows XP

1. Confirm that you have the OpenGL system file in the Microsoft Windows system folder. Open 'My Computer' and double-click the 'C:\\' drive. Open the WINDOWS folder.
2. Look for the folder that readers 'SYSTEM' or 'SYSTEM32' (the name of the folder may vary depending on the version of Windows XP that you have installed). Look for the file entitled 'OpenGL32.dll.' Do not click on the file once you have located it. If you do not see the file, you may need to reinstall the Windows operating system by inserting the original Windows installation disk and following the on-screen prompts.
3. Activate video hardware acceleration in OpenGL. The acceleration benefits of OpenGL are not turned on by default. To activate, download the most recent graphic drivers for your graphics card from the website of your card's manufacturer. All major graphic card manufacturers, including NVidia, Intel, 3D-Labs and ATI, allow consumers to download and install the latest graphic drivers from their websites (links in the Resources section). Double-click the installer file once it is finished downloading and follow the on-screen prompts to automatically update your graphic card drivers. The update will also update your system's OpenGL files to ensure that you have the most recent version of the OpenGL software.
4. Restart the computer. Click the 'Start' menu in the lower left-hand corner of the Windows XP screen and select 'Restart.'
5. Launch your favorite PC game that uses the OpenGL framework. The graphics will now be accelerated using OpenGL technology, resulting in faster, smoother graphic displays.
